Ceftin Directions

It's recommended that with each dose of Ceftin, you take it with a full glass of water. You may take Ceftin on an empty stomach or with food or milk if any stomach irritation occurs. Be sure to take all of the prescribed Ceftin even if you begin to feel better. IT's possible, and even likely, that your symptoms will begin to improve before the infection has been completely treated. Do not take your dose of ceftin at the same time as any antacids such as Maalox, Tums, or Rolaids, or any other medications that are intended to reduce stomach acid unless you were instructed by a doctor to do so. It's possible that taking antacids and other stomach acid reducers while taking this antibiotic will reduce its effectiveness.

Side Effects of Ceftin

The following serious side effects may occur while you are taking this medication, and it's important that you stop taking Ceftin and immediately seek emergency medical attention or immediately inform your doctor:

  • any sign of unusual bleeding or bruising
  • the appearance of a rash, any redness, or itching
  • the sudden appearance of mucous or blood in your stool
  • or the sudden appearance of any other less serious side effects

Do not stop taking Ceftin, but be sure to notify your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • sudden mild nausea or diarrhea,
  • the appearance of a yeast infection in the mouth or vagina.

Ceftin - Cephalosporin Antibiotic Treatment

Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, introduced on the market thirty years ago and sold as Ceftin (brand name). The antibiotic is available in diverse forms, including as tablets, oral suspension powder and sodium salt for intravenous use. Ceftin is administered to treat bacterial infections caused by haemophilus influenzae, neisseria gonorrhea and also for Lyme disease.

Well-tolerated and with limited side-effects, Ceftin is recommended to be taken orally and best with food (increases the bioavailability of Ceftin up to 50%). This way you can reduce the incidence of adverse reactions, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or acute abdominal pain. As an antibiotic, Ceftin has a bactericide effect, destroying bacteria existent in your body. Different types of bacterial infections can be treated with Ceftin, from mild to moderate and even more severe.

If you intend to take Ceftin, the best thing to do is to consult your doctor and ask for his/her professional advice. Be sure to mention if you are allergic to any drugs, including Cefuroxime and penicillin-based antibiotics. The recommended dosage might be reduced in case you suffer from liver or kidney impairment, metabolic disease (disease), coronary failure or stomach problems. Once you discuss the treatment plan with your doctor and you are given the prescription, be sure to take it as it was given to you. Do not make any changes on your dosage and do not stop taking the medicine if you notice signs of improvement. Sometimes, the symptoms improve without the bacteria being completely eliminated.

Your doctor will analyze your medical condition and recommend a suitable form of Ceftin. If you suffer from PKU (phenylketonuria - genetic disorder, accumulation of phenylalanine in excess), then be sure to talk about your Ceftin treatment. Oral suspension forms contain sources of phenylalanine, being harmful for those suffering from this metabolic disease. Also, if you experience any side-effects, seek medical attention and the doctor will review your current treatment plan. Ceftin can cause diarrhea (watery or bloody), fever, cephalalgia and skin rash. There is a low risk for allergic reactions, caused by hypersensitivity to diverse active ingredients. Vertigo and insomnia are also likely to appear.

Ceftin tablets are indicated for the following medical conditions:

  • pharyngitis (commonly known as sore throat) or inflammation of the tonsils - both caused by Streptococcus pyogenes; the medication is extremely efficient when it comes to reducing bacteria from entering gates (nose, pharynx);
  • otitis media - inflammation of the middle ear, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, haemophilus influenzae, streptococcus pyogenes;
  • sinusitis - paranasal sinuses inflammation;
  • skin infections - commonly produced by staphylococcus aureus;
  • urinary tract infections - pathogenic bacterial infection, caused by E.coli;
  • venereal infections - gonorrhea, similar doses for both genders, with urethral and cervical bacterial invasion;
  • Lyme disease - acute inflammatory disease, with skin rashes, joint swelling and fever; caused by erythema migrans, a bacteria commonly transmitted through ticks.

Oral suspensions of Ceftin are usually indicated for use in pediatric patients, from early as three months up to 12 years old. Main indications include: pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis and impetigo.

The doses for Ceftin tablets vary between 250, 500 and 1000 mg, to be administered over a period of 7 to 10 days. Oral suspensions dosage is of 20-30 mg/kg/day, generally between 500 and 1000 mg, administered for 10 days. The tablets are white, being film-coated and shaped as capsules, while the suspension is represented by a tutti-frutti flavored powder.

Ceftin has been released on the market as a broad-spectrum antibiotic, having a powerful effect on numerous bacteria. Nevertheless, excessive or prolonged use of such antibiotics can cause microorganisms to become resistant or increase in number. Precaution must be taken in case of patients who suffer from inflammation of the colon and also in those with gastrointestinal malabsorption. If you have taken excessive doses, you stand a high risk for overdosing, experiencing the following symptoms: seizures, nausea, vomiting, vertigo and intense migraines, fainting, coma.

When Ceftin is administered orally, the drug is absorbed rapidly at the level of the gastrointestinal tract and hydrolyzed into active metabolites. It is then distributed into the blood stream and subsequently to suffering tissues. Ceftin has a high affinity for binding with plasmatic proteins, of almost 50%. A large percent of the antibiotic is eliminated through the urine, unchanged. In patients suffering from renal disease, the half-life of Ceftin is prolonged and thus certain precautions must be taken. Drug interactions include: other beta-lactam antibiotics, cephalosporin or probenecids, not to mention diuretics. Ask the advice of a medical professional before you take any type of cephalosporin, including Ceftin. You will be informed on clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, indications and contraindications, plus dosage and side-effects.
